Philadelphia Indigenous Peoples' Day 2021.
October 10, 2021
Dance performances, food, vendors, and speakers marked Philadelphia’s first officially celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day as crowds gathered at Bartram’s Garden under a cloudy downtown Philadelphia skyline. Although this year marked the 11th annual Indigenous Day Celebration, it was the first since Mayor Jim Kenney signed an executive order last February replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Members of Philly-based dance companies Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac and Native Nations Dance Theater (NNDT) shared interactive productions featuring their respective Mexicayotl and Native American cultures. Throughout the afternoon, attendees had the opportunity to learn about Seminole, Creek, Iroquois, and Aztec tribal regalia and participate in dance workshops to learn more about the history of traditional dances and ceremonies.
